Indonesian Architects Week @Tokyo

Introduction

Indonesia is fourth largest country in the world with various culture, history, and geographic conditions that make diversity in traditional architectural character. From ancient temples in Java, traditional vernacular architecture, colonial buildings, post independence architecture to International style architecture, represent the influences of Indonesian architecture history.

The new movement in contemporary Indonesian architecture has emerged since economic crisis in 1997, followed by the fall of New Order regime in 1998, that gave opportunities to local architects because many clients can't afford foreign architects and also liberation from government's strict building regulation.

Nowadays architectural scene in Indonesia and achievement of Indonesian architects show significant improvement in a decade, with various projects that involve local architect and design competitions that allow architects to get equal opportunity. Some of them also got achievement in international competition/award or project abroad.

Indonesian Architects Week @ Tokyo 2011 is an exhibition of Indonesian architects works and projects from various generation , various scale and categories , from emerging to senior architects, from residential to high rise building ,and from competition to built project. The purposes of this exhibition are to introduce Indonesian Architects to international public, to share and encourage innovation, and strengthen relationship in world architecture communities.

This exhibition is held as a collateral event of UIA (International Union of Architect) Congress at Tokyo.
